A house must have furniture. This is not so much advice as a necessity. People in a living space, whether it is an apartment for rent or their own house, will need a bed to sleep on, chairs, a desk, a dining table, and other things. A completely bare and empty living space is impossible to live in. However, not everyone knows what materials are available for use in making home furniture. There are several common options that someone can turn to, some of which are more “traditional” than others in terms of what material is used on what piece of furniture.
Wood
Wood, in the context of home furniture, is among the most versatile and the most traditional of materials. Depending on the type of wood used, it can be a structural support or make up the framework all by itself. The more durable, solid types of wood – such as oak and maple – are often used for large pieces of furniture. A common example would be desks, chairs, or beds. Beds queen-sized or larger, for example, tend to be made of solid wood. This material also goes well with most building construction materials, particularly in the Philippine real estate market. The availability of high-quality lumber in the country also makes it relatively easy to find.
Metal
Metal is also a prevalent material, though not for larger pieces of home furniture. More often than not, metal is used as the basic skeleton for beds of various sizes and builds, as well as desks, tables, and chairs. Metals are a favored material for use in double-deck beds and other pieces of home furniture that conserve space or fulfill dual roles. For larger beds and tables, it is more often utilized as a means of providing structural support. Metal tables are relatively rare and are often covered in other materials to provide a more homely and less industrial appearance.
Plastic
Hard plastics are cheap and can often be the practical material of choice for someone living in an apartment for rent. They lack the raw durability of wood, but are able to weather the usual wear and tear of regular use without much need for repairs. Plastic is most often used for tables and seats, and is the most popular material for use in making computer tables. Temporary furniture, such as collapsible tables and folding chairs, are also commonly made out of plastic.
There are other materials that furniture may be made out of. Someone living in an apartment for rent must keep in mind that the best materials and pieces of home furniture are expensive, and purchasing them may cut into their ability to reliably pay their rent. In most cases, going with whatever material works best for the purpose of the furniture is best, rather than selecting something simply because it is made of the same stuff as everything else.
